Violence and Contagion in Early Modern Italy

Dr. Colin Rose

What pushes societies to violence? Historically, homicide rates have fluctuated alongside other markers of social peace, such as stable government and acceptance of powerful institutions. When governments fail or institutions crumble, violence can spread rapidly. Using the example of a major plague and its fallout in seventeenth-century Bologna, Italy, Dr. Colin Rose discusses how strong social institutions are critical to the maintenance of low levels of violence and demonstrates what can happen when those institutions fail to respond to societal crises effectively.
