Contrary to what some people might say, the internet is not an anonymous place.  Every time you visit a website, you must tell that server a little bit about your computer.  Just by visiting this page, I was able to discover your IP address, your Operating System, your web browser, the time & date of your visit and some of your video settings.

Once your IP address is known, it is very easy to do a 'reverse-lookup' of someone's IP address to find out that they are:

dialupmodem24.stcath.someisp.com

With this information and the date & time of the event, I can contact the user's Internet Service Provider (in this fictional example, the ISP is SomeISP.com)**.  They are then able to check their log files to find out which of their user's connected to dialup modem #24 at the time in question.

** I'm reasonably certain that I would probably need a search warrant before your ISP ever told me anything, though.

Most hackers know this and use other methods to cover their tracks.  However, they average user may not realize that their surfing habits are not as anonymous as they think.  Keep that in mind the next time you're booking your vacation online while at work!  :)
